USD/ZAR: reflects the rate of the USD to the South African rand. It’s traded most actively on Tuesday, to a lesser extent on Monday. This pair’s peculiarity is its extremely high volatility, which may reach 2,500 pips a day. It doesn’t depend on the trading session, the instrument’s price may experience sharp swings during the whole day. ZAR is affected by raw material prices: gold, diamonds, some metals (iron, copper, etc.).
Beside that, the rate of USD/ZAR is influenced by the following factors:
—major economic indicators of both countries;
—interest rates set by the central banks of the US and South Africa;
—balances of trade of the two countries;
—price of oil and other commodities.
There’s a correlation between this pair and USD/RUB, and also XAU/USD and XAU/EUR. Vast difference in the interest rates of the counties allows for the carry trade strategy.
